Description of the event

The session was held by Maury Peiperl, Professor of Leadership and Strategic Change at IMD, who talked about change management and the strategic role of human resources, in a time when companies are confronted with the deepest downturn in more than fifty years, one than is having a profound impact on every economical, political and social aspect, from employment and profit to "survival". Now, more than ever, the HR function must raise the game and fulfill an important role, as a real business partner: it must be able to think strategically, implement change and prepare the organization for the moment when the downturn will come to an end.

Maury Peiperl is a Professor of Leadership and Strategic Change at IMD Lausanne. His areas of interest are organization development, executive careers, change management, HR strategy, and global mobility. Professor Peiperl has taught, researched, or consulted in these areas in 25 countries on four continents, and is dedicated to promoting the role of business in sustainable global development and in the resolution of cross-national conflict. Maury Peiperl is co-author of the leading textbook on change management, Managing Change, as well as two books on careers and work, Career Frontiers and Career Creativity.

Before becoming a professor, Maury Peiperl worked for IBM, Merrill Lynch, and LEK Consulting, and as a research fellow at Harvard Business School. From 1992 to 2004, he was a professor at London Business School (UK). He has also held visiting or affiliate appointments at the University of Maryland (USA), HEC (France), and Templeton College, Oxford (UK). Professor Peiperl has directed programs for numerous clients including Adecco, Deloitte, CCHBC, EDS, GlaxoSmithKline, Nortel Networks, Rentokil Initial, and UPM, and has designed and taught collaboratively with a range of corporate, government, and university partners. Professor Peiperl holds a BS in Engineering from Princeton University (USA), and an MBA, AM, and PhD from Harvard University (USA).
